Trying to identify a gemstone based on its color can be tricky. There are many colored stones that mimic precious gemstones so closely, they are often sold as more rare and expensive gemstones in retail settings.
There are some key indicators that help determine the differences between gemstones such as rubies, garnets, and spinels which are all very close in color. Rubies are known for refracting light differently than the less precious imposter gems; garnet and spinel. Rubies will appear two-tone from most directions of view, while spinel and garnets remain the same tone from all directions.
Most precious gemstones like rubies, sapphires, emeralds, citrines, tourmalines and topazes will have this two-tone trait also known as "double refraction".
